Chapter 548: Will 547 feel uncomfortable?

When Mo Xiuchen returned to the office, Wen Ran was engrossed in her computer screen, not looking up.

His deep eyes rested on her elegant face, a warmth appearing in Mo Xiuchen’s gaze. It seemed seeing her in front of him made him feel secure and at ease.

He didn’t return to his own seat, but walked elegantly towards her instead.

As he approached, Wen Ran looked up, meeting his eyes that held a thread of tenderness. A charming smile lit up her face. Her voice was gentle and soft, like a brush of spring breeze against his ears, bringing comfort to his heart.

“Finished with the phone call?”

She questioned casually, not intending to pry into whom he was talking to. Mo Xiuchen’s lips curved slightly as he moved to stand behind her. His strong hands rested on her shoulders, applying just the right amount of pressure as he began to massage. His voice was soft and soothing as it fell on her ears:

“Yes, it was Lu Zhiyan. They’ve already reached G City.”

Wen Ran blinked, her gaze lifting towards Mo Xiuchen, “Was Wu Tianyi brought back?”

She felt somewhat excited. If Wu Tianyi had been brought back, maybe they could learn about Fu Jingyi’s whereabouts from him?

“Yes, he was brought in. Perhaps, we could figure out where Fu Jingyi is hiding,” Mo Xiuchen deliberately slowed his movements, his gentle gaze towards her intensifying. Pity seeped into his gaze. He whispered softly: “Ranran, once we find Fu Jingyi, we can lift the poison affecting you.”

If they find Fu Jingyi, he’d do anything to get him to reveal the antidote, Mo Xiuchen vowed in his heart.

Wen Ran tensed slightly, a flicker of discomposure sweeping across her face. But she quickly regained her calm, her elegant features composed as she said, “Xiuchen, stop massaging me. You should get back to work.”

She didn’t want to discuss her condition. Once the topic came up, she couldn’t control her sorrow and fear. She was scared – scared that her time by his side was limited and her departure would deeply sadden him.

Mo Xiuchen seemed to feel her emotional conflict. His eyes flickered with pity. He bent down and pressed his handsome face to her cheek, a silent reassurance that he was there for her and she didn’t need to be afraid.

“Ranran, if you’re tired, stop working. Rest for a while. I’ll help you finish the rest.”

With that, he pulled her up from her chair and sat down in it himself. He drew Wen Ran into his arms and had her sit on his lap. One hand circling her waist, the other got back to her unfinished work.

“Xiuchen, you don’t need to help.”

Before Wen Ran could recover, Mo Xiuchen had deftly scooped her into his arms. His familiar masculine scent invaded her senses, causing her heart to race uncontrollably.

Under the ambiguity of their closeness, her fair cheeks flushed. His face was close, his tempting lips near her ear. His words carried a warm breath into her ear, stirring her heart:

“I am your husband, it is only right that I help you.”

His words carried an undercurrent of pride, as if the best thing was for him to take care of everything for her while she doesn’t have to do anything.

Wen Ran’s eyebrows pulled together slightly. Feeling uncomfortable being held like this, she struggled to get up. But as soon as she tried, he tightened his grip around her waist.

“Ranran, don’t move. You are sitting on my lap, if you move, I won’t be able to control my thoughts.”

Mo Xiuchen’s voice was slightly hoarse. At her slight struggle, his gaze deepened. Wen Ran looked at his eyes, now shadowed, her heart skipped a beat. Remaining frozen on his lap, she dared not move again.

The events of the previous night suddenly rushed back into her mind. Her face heated up and a bitter taste welled up in her heart. Her lips parting, she timidly asked, “Xiuchen, are you uncomfortable?”

“Huh?”

Mo Xiuchen appeared not to understand what she meant. His deep eyes blinked, staring intently at her.

“First let me go, I want to drink water.”

Wen Ran didn’t have the courage to ask again, nor was she brave enough to explain her meaning under these circumstances. She changed the topic and directed her clear eyes towards a cup of water next to him.

Mo Xiuchen smiled slightly and picked up the cup to hand it to her, releasing his hold on her waist.

As soon as she was free, Wen Ran immediately stood up.

Mo Xiuchen simply smiled and made no further attempts to pull her back into his lap. Instead, he focused on finishing the remaining work. Wen Ran stood next to him, cradling the cup in both her hands. Her gaze rested on the man engrossed in work, her heart unintentionally softening slightly.

The task took an hour to complete.

He had finished all of Wen Ran’s work due for completion the next day.

“I don’t need to come in tomorrow?”

Seeing him shut down the computer, Wen Ran joked with a smile.

Mo Xiuchen gave a slight smile, his gaze lingered on her beautiful features. Unable to resist, he reached out to touch her face, cheerfully saying, “Now that I’ve completed your work for tomorrow, you can spend the day with me. Just serve me tea, that’s good enough.”

She wasn’t his only secretary.

In fact, most of the complex work was done by other secretaries. The work Wen Ran had been handling these past few days was light, a deliberate allocation on his part to keep her occupied and prevent her overthinking.

Seeing her so focused on work, only made him want to step in and help her.

His feelings were contradictory. Wen Ran didn’t move, her eyes filled with a warm, tender smile. Ignoring the fleeting emotion in her heart, she jokingly replied, “No problem. It would be my honor to serve President Mo.”

Her playful words made Mo Xiuchen laugh. He was just about to respond when a sudden phone call interrupted him. Reluctantly removing his hand from her face, he took out his phone. His gaze flickered on seeing the incoming call.

“Who is it?”

Wen Ran asked casually, her gaze falling on his phone. Spotting the name on the screen, a look of confusion crossed her face. “The chairman?”

The caller ID read “Father”. It was natural for Wen Ran to assume it was Mo Jingteng.

“Not him.”

Mo Xiuchen faintly smiled, his slender finger pressing the answer button. His voice, deep yet gentle, slipped from his lips, “Hello, Dad.”

Wen Ran was taken aback by the way Mo Xiuchen addressed the caller. Realizing it was her father, Gu Yan, who had called, and not Mo Jingteng, it suddenly made sense.

Mo Xiuchen would never use such polite and warm tones with Mo Jingteng.

Gu Yan must have said something on the other end of the phone, as Mo Xiuchen’s facial expression changed sharply, he blurted, “Dad, how could this happen?”
